Cheonggyecheon Stream

Until it was restored in 2005, Cheonggyecheon Stream existed only as a neglected

watercourse hidden by an overpass. Today, it has been transformed into a haven

of natural beauty amidst the bustle of city life.

Narae Bridge, expressing a butterfly in flight, and Gwanggyo Bridge, symbolizing

the harmony of the past and future, are just two of the more than twenty beautiful

bridges that cross the stream. The ‘Rhythmic Wall Stream’, lined with fine marble,

sculptures, and Korea’s 8th stone building, Palseokdam, adorn the

Cheonggyecheon Stream.

Cheonggyecheon Stream passes close to Deoksugung Palace, Seoul Plaza, the

Sejong Center, Insa-dong Street, Changdeokgung Palace, and Changgyeonggung

Palace, allowing visitors to easily visit major tourist sites after a leisurely stroll

along the stream.

Cheonggye Plaza

Cheonggye Plaza in Sejong-ro is situated at the fountainhead of Cheonggyecheon

Stream. From Dong-A Ilbo Building, the starting point of Cheonggyecheon Stream,

Cheonggye Plaza stretches all the way to Sindapcheolgyo Bridge. The Plaza is

roughly 160m long and 50m wide and has a beautiful fountain, an artificial

waterfall, and a miniature replica of Cheonggyecheon Stream, as well as a walking

path. The area commemorates the Cheonggyecheon Stream Restoration Project,

and also symbolizes gathering, harmony, peace, and unity.

Cheonggye Plaza is roughly 2,500 square meters and is located at the starting

point of Cheonggyecheon Stream. The square, created based on the design of

Korean traditional bojagi (a colorful wrapping cloth), features the elegant beauty of

traditional stonework that is colorful, yet tasteful. The Plaza also includes a model

of Cheonggyecheon that provides visitors with a bird's-eye view of the formerly

restored Cheonggyecheon Stream. At the Plaza, there are plaques that provide

detailed commentaries on the 22 bridges that span the stream as well as a number

of graceful fountains that add to the ambience of the area.

After completing Cheonggye Plaza, Seoul Metropolitan Government designated the

area as a vehicle-free zone on holidays, providing more leisure space for

pedestrians. Since then, the waterfront areas of Cheonggyecheon Stream, and the

surrounding streets have become popular places for those seeking refreshment

and a variety of cultural experiences. A favorite of many is Candle Fountain, which

features the magnificent synchronicity of three different lighting fixtures and a 4

meter-high, two-tiered waterfall. Along the two sides of the waterfall are

Palseokdam'(wishing wells) made of 8 different stones from each of the nation's

8provinces.

Cheonggye Plaza never goes to sleep: visitors can enjoy the fantastic display of

light and water even at night.

Hangang Park (한강공원) is a representative people’s park located by Hangang

River (한강).

It was created through the “Hangang River Comprehensive Development Project”

in the 1980s, covering a huge area that is dedicated to the citizens, providing

areas for sports and relaxation. You can see many people strolling or jogging

along the trail paths, in-line skaters, bicyclers, and soccer fields or basketball

courts. The Citizen’s Park is composed of Gwangnaru, Jamsil, Ttukseom,

Jamwon, Banpo, Ichon, Yeouido, Yanghwa, Mangwon, Seonyudo, Nanji, and

Gangseojigu – a total of 12 districts. Each park has its unique characteristics that

fit the district, and especially Yeouido, Jamsil, and Ttukseom districts are very

popular because of the ferry cruise services on Hangang River. The most popular

are the ones in Yeouido and Ttukseom. Because the Yeouido area is where all the

major TV Studios are located, countless dramas use this park for their shoots.

Here you can also observe the birds of Bam Isle, a designated ecological

preservation area. On the other hand, Ttukseom district is called the windsurfing

and water-skiing mecca, and you can experience all sorts of leisure sports here. It

is a sports heaven.

Hangang Park is beautiful in the evenings as well, filled with the lights from

Hangang River, the surrounding city buildings, streets, and the traffic. The sound

of the river waves blend well with the city’s nightscape. It is especially good to

use the ferry cruise in the evening as well, viewing the river area and scenery in

the pleasant river breeze.

Itaewon was the first special tourist zone designated in 1997 among the 5 special

tourist zones in Seoul. It is a multicultural place where over 20,000 foreigners live

and is widely recognized by international visitors.

The name Itaewon started to spread worldwide in the 1980s, when Korea hosted

the 1986 Seoul Asian Games and the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games, as well as

international conferences. Since then, Itaewon has been a popular travel

Insa-dong (인사동), located in the heart of the city, is an important place where

old but precious and traditional goods are on display.

There is one main road in Insa-dong with alleys on each side.

Within these alleys are galleries, traditional restaurants, traditional teahouses, and

cafes.

The galleries are the heartbeat of Insa-dong. There are about 100 galleries in the

area and you can see every example of traditional Korean fine art from paintings to

sculptures.

The most famous galleries are Hakgojae Gallery, which functions as the center of

folk art, Gana Art Gallery, which promotes many promising artists, and Gana Art

Center.

The teahouses and restaurants are the perfect complement to the galleries.

At first they might be hard to find, but if you take the time to stroll around the

twisting alleyways, the window shopping in itself can be very entertaining.

The shops in Insa-dong are very popular among all age groups, because each

one is unique.

space). Both offer breathtaking views of the cityscape.

The war momorial and museum

The grounds of the War Memorial of Korea were once the

headquarters of the Korean Infantry.

Many experts from different fields were consulted numerous times and

exhaustive research was done in order to complete the exhibits.

This memorial is the largest of its kind in the world.

There are 8 main exhibits at the War Memorial: the Hogukchumo

Exhibit, War History Exhibit, June 25th War Exhibit, Overseas

Dispatched Troops Exhibits, Military Development Exhibit, Large

Equipment Exhibit, and the Outdoor Exhibit.

The Hogukchumo Exhibit honors the spirit of those who perished

fighting on the battlefield.

Visitors can learn all about Korea's war history by visiting the War

History Exhibit, June 25 War Exhibit, Overseas Dispatched Troops

Exhibits, and the Military Development Exhibit, as well as witness how

the Korean military developed over the years.

Different kinds of weapons and military equipment are exhibited as

well, inside and outside the building.

Exhibits inside the building display equipment used during the Korean

War in such a way as to invite comparison between the items.

Large weapontry and equipment used by different countries during

World War II and the Vietnam War are also on display.

In the Large Equipment Exhibit on the second floor, many kinds of

defense industry equipment and both real and model weapons are

displayed.

In the Bangsan Equipment Exhibit, you can look at weapons and war

equipment produced in Korea.

In the War Memorial's Storage Room, 17,800 files and artifacts of war

are preserved.

Modern damage control and prevention devices have been installed to

keep these materials safe from harm.

Besides these, you can also visit the Miniature Exhibit or the Peace

Hall. There is a lecture hall at the memorial, and many presentations

are held here. If you want to learn more about any specific aspect of

war, you can head over to the bookstore to pick up a book or a

pamphlet.

The shop also sells a variety of military ouvenirs that will not only help

you remember your time at the memorial but will also remind you of

the significant role war has played in world history.

Suwon Hwaseong Fortress.

Hwaseong Fortress was constructed as an act of filial devotion by Jeongjo,

the 22nd king of the Joseon Dynasty (1392~1910), and to strengthen his power,

eradicate party conflict, and fortify the southern area of the capital. Construction

was started along Mt.

Paldalsan in January 1794 and completed in September 1796 under the

supervision of Chae Je-gong, a former minister and the magistrate of

Yeongjungchubu County.

The Suwon Hwaseong Fortress was the world’s first planned city.

The Hwaseong Fortress is regarded as having been more thoroughly and

systematically designed than comparable structures of its time, including those in

Saint Petersburg, Russia or Washington, D.C. in the United States.

The Hwaseong Fortress stands as a testament to the advancements in technical

theories and applications made during the Joseon Dynasty.

An enormous amount of money and manpower was used in the project, on a scale

of unprecedented in magnitude in the history of the Joseon Dynasty.

It was an immense civil engineering project which could not have been initiated

and completed without King Jeongjo's unique determination.
